Financial support for visiting foreign PhD students and young researchers
The International Max Planck Research School on Earth System Modelling (IMPRS-ESM) at the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M) and the University of Hamburg is jointly funded by the ZEIT Foundation Ebelin and Gerd Bucerius and the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science (MPG). Additional financial and/or technical support is provided by the University of Hamburg (participating departments: Geosciences, Marine Sciences, and Economics) and by associated research institutes (DKRZ, and Models & Data in Hamburg; GKSS in Geesthacht; CESR at the University of Kassel; PIK in Potsdam; and MPI for Biogeochemistry in Jena). Through its Guest and Exchange Program the IMPRS-ESM is able to provide a stipend to foreign doctoral students or young researchers, to visit the School or a collaborating institute for a limited period of time (up to three months). The stipend is based on the regulations for PhD stipends as specified by the Max Planck Society in 2005.
The most important aspects associated with the offered fellowship are listed below. The amount of the monthly payment is sufficient to cover the basic cost of living during a guest’s visit at the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology or one of our collaborating institutes. However, visiting doctoral students must arrange for health insurance, to cover for possible medical treatment during their visit in Germany. Reduced rate health insurances are available to PhD students in Germany; assistance to arrange for a health insurance will be provided upon arrival at the host institute. Please note that a health care plan comparable in quality to the public health care is available at monthly rates of around 100 Euro.
Benefits, rights, and duties associated with a guest stipend*)
| topic | stipend agreement |
| Monthly support | EUR 1,000 |
| Tax & social security duty | None |
| Health insurance (monthly payments) | Responsibility of visitor (for about 29 - 100 Euro); |
*) Following the ‘Stipendienrichtlinien der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft’.
In addition, the Guest and Exchange Program covers the travel costs (‘best price’ ticket only) to Hamburg and back to the doctoral student’s country of residence.
Stipend holders have no official obligations other than to fulfill their individual science agreement, which is basic to the invitation within the IMPRS-ESM Guest and Exchange Program. We regard an early and good understanding of the program procedures important to develop and maintain fair conditions and treatment within the community of PhD students.
