Funding of PhD students

Up until now, the IMPRS-ESM has been able to assign 5 to 10 new doctoral positions to promising applicants each year. These positions are financed by either stipends or doctoral contracts, each funding type being made available to the School under certain constraints. For example, the ZEIT Foundation, one of our sponsors, requests that its stipends are assigned to foreign students exclusively, preferably to students from developing countries. Doctoral contracts usually come without such constraints, however, students on a contract enjoy slightly less freedom in the organization of their daily business.

As shown in the general remarks, different institutions offer different types of support to the IMPRS-ESM. As a result the funding situation of doctoral studies within the IMPRS-ESM is characterized by a variety of contract types and with specific conditions. Successful candidates receive an offer for financial support, which they are free to accept or reject. Accepting the support means accepting the incoherent salary-system.

These differences among the group of doctoral students cannot be changed, even though the IMPRS-ESM would prefer to have a unique system.

Generally 2 types of funding can be offered (besides contracts with third-party funded students) which vary between EUR 990 - 1,100 monthly. Additional benefits for spouse or children are possible. Please note that after having decided on one form of funding or the other it is not possible to make any changes at a later stage.
